Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain of the Indian women's cricket team, celebrated their monumental achievement by posing with the Women's World Cup trophy at the Gateway of India in Mumbai. This moment mirrored the iconic image of MS Dhoni from 2011, marking a significant milestone as India clinched their first Women's World Cup title by defeating South Africa in a thrilling final. The match took place at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, where India secured a 52-run victory, ending their long wait for success in ICC tournaments.
Recreating Dhoni's Legendary Moment
The International Cricket Council (ICC) shared images of Harmanpreet at the Gateway of India on social media. One photo showcased her with the trophy, reminiscent of Dhoni's pose with the Men's World Cup. In 2011, under Dhoni's captaincy, India faced only one defeat against South Africa and other top teams, leading them to the final. In that decisive match, Gautam Gambhir scored 97 runs, and Dhoni contributed 91 runs, helping India chase down a target of 275 runs.
Exciting Final Match Highlights
In the exhilarating Women's World Cup final, India set a formidable target of 298 runs, thanks to Shafali Verma's explosive innings of 87 runs off 78 balls and Deepti Sharma's steady 58 runs from 58 balls. South Africa struggled in response, getting bowled out for 246 runs in 45.3 overs, despite a valiant effort from their captain Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 101 runs off 98 balls.
Kaur Honors Cricket Legends
Following the intense final, Harmanpreet expressed her gratitude towards cricket legends Jhulan Goswami and Anjum Chopra for their unwavering support throughout her 16-year career. She remarked, "Jhulan Di was my biggest support. When I joined the team, she was leading it. She always supported me in my early days when I was very raw and didn't know much about cricket. I used to play with boys, and the school principal picked me up, and within a year, I started representing the country. In the initial days, Anjum (Chopra) provided me with a lot of support. I always remember how she used to take me along with her team." Harmanpreet added, "I learnt a lot from her and passed it on to my team. Both of them have been a great support for me. I am very grateful that I got to share a special moment with them. It was a very emotional moment. I think we all were waiting for this. Finally, we were able to touch this trophy."
